When gutter cleaning makes sense
Cleaning is important when gutters are packed with pine needles, leaves, roof grit, and sludge. If water is already overflowing or downspouts are blocked, cleaning may be the first step before any other work.
When gutter guards make sense
Gutter guards make sense when the gutter system is in good condition but keeps clogging because of nearby trees and roof debris. The guard should be matched to the debris type, roof pitch, water volume, and gutter condition.
Guards are not maintenance-free
No gutter guard should be sold as completely maintenance-free. Fine debris, pollen, and roof grit can still require occasional service. A good guard system reduces clogs and cleaning frequency, but it does not remove all future maintenance forever.
